  •  "son you don't have to do this"... (12+ / 0-)

...My step-dad Tommy Bundick, was at 230 lbs. a gentle giant. His whole family made their living on the Eastern Shore of Va. They were "watermen". Tommy taught me everything about fishing, crabbing and oystering. Soft-spoken, never spoke "out of turn" or "out of the side of his neck". Unassuming. He made cinder blocks for $60 a week. Dated my mom for two years. My mom was a real looker. Dated the famous architect Jack Vogel. He had money and tried to buy our love. We chose Tommy!

Tommy got pancreatic cancer when I was 15. In 1968, they opened you up. Cut all the nerves in your stomach. Sent you home to die. I watched him throw his stomach up in a column of blood one day. I was a small fry when I was a kid, 140 lbs soaking wet. Wore the same clothes to school from 7th to 10th grade. I used to pick Tommy up and put him in the bathtub and bathe him. He always said, "son, you don't have to do this". I would say through tears, "I know I do it because I love you, Tommy". He was only 29 years old when they put him in the ground in February 10, 1969, not even a week after we got the news my Uncle Marty got killed in Vietnam. He taught me true love. He never hit Gail and me, even when my mom "ordered" him to. He loved my mom so much. He loved Marlo, my baby sister. He loved life! I'll see him again one day soon. Not soon enough.
