  •  Beautiful pic Keith. That is about as red as red (7+ / 0-)

can be. But I'm not sure that's right that they get that color from consuming Mercuric sulfide. I suspect the color simply evolved as an evolutionary trait just like has taken place in many other moths, butterflies, and insects. I'm also skeptical that it could tolerate enough M sulfide to cause such a change. Many insects eat plants that contain toxic alkaloid compounds that build up in their system and  give them some protection against predators but I've never heard of any that do so with M sulfide or of any that eat something that causes them to change color, although I think I do recall reading somewhere that some diets can cause minor changes in colors of a few but I can't remember now what those were.I was curious enough to go looking for some info on it and couldn't find anything that mentioned it as a contributing factor to their red color, only that the name was probably derived from the fact that cinnabar is indeed red. But I also found nothing that disproved it either . Where did you get your information from? I'd really be interested in learning more about it.

Anyway, no matter what caused the color, it's definitely RED! Very cool moth. Thanks for introducing me to a new moth I'd never heard of before.

and took the commentary of the photographer who snapped the pic as fact.  Dr Arcadia called me out on it earlier in my Kosmail.  Kudos to you guys for not letting anything get past you, and my bad for simply parroting something I read in a non-scientific forum without doing some more research before posting.

Not one of my better moments.
