And so, the unprovoked attack on secular humanists continues. Mr. Klein's "explanation" does nothing to address his factually wrong and insulting jab in his original article. The issue of "organization" is irrelevant to the implied meaning of his original barb; the impact of that statement was to suggest that secular humanists coldly withhold aid when disaster strikes. Whether or not this message was intentional, that is how it is being read (and frankly, I don't understand how it could be interpreted in any other way). Replace "secular humanists" with "Jews" or "Native Americans" and you can instantly see why this statement was so irresponsible and malicious. I do not want an explanation from Mr. Klein, I want an apology and an unconditional retraction of his slander.

I've just read Joe Klein's "rebuttal" to the protest over his insulting statement regarding aid after the Oklahoma tornadoes:  "funny how you don’t see organized groups of secular humanists giving out hot meals."

Even aside from the fact that that slam was completely gratuitous and unnecessary given the subject of his column ... apparently his weasel defense of it now is based on the word "organized."

As has been shown, however ...  Yes, groups of of secular humanists -- atheists -- did, in fact, ORGANIZE to provide help.  How could they have provided the sort of help -- which it is clearly documented they did -- without some kind of ORGANIZING?

I am not an atheist, and in fact consider myself very spiritually based.  However, some of the key values I hold dear based on that spirituality are:  honesty, integrity, humility, and personal responsibility.

That is why I now feel compelled to write and condemn Klein not only for his arrogant, insulting, dishonest original statement, but for his continued lack of integrity in failing to take responsibility for it.
