  •  This is a HUGE victory. Now can someone explain (8+ / 0-)

how gay couples who are not allowed to marry in the states where they dwell will be protected and allowed federal benefits?

I quickly read the decision, but didn't get that answer.  Itseems as though we will now see a huge collapse of opposition to marriages in many states, but still will gay people who live in retrograde states have to go elsewhere, get married, and then have federal rights?

if a same sex couple gets married in a state that allows it, the federal government will recognize it.

however, if a same sex couple then moves to a state that does not, they will negate all state rights to marriage

so.  same sex couples now get (taxes, social security, etc).

same sex couples in states that ban it do not get state rights (property division, hospital visitation, etc).

If people live in a backward state, they suffer in a myriad of ways.

        Thanks for the explanation.

      •  That is another case for another time (0+ / 0-)

The Supreme Court can only decide what is before it per Article III of the Consitution.  State reciprocity will have to wait until another case winds its way up to the Supreme Court.

      •  But wasn't that (0+ / 0-)

        part of DOMA?

So doesn't that not apply anymore?
