  •  People can demand a lot of things. (0+ / 0-)

    The reality is this:

They're not going to vote for Democrats.
They might not vote for Republicans, but their votes carry less weight than the votes of people who can be won over by either party.  That includes a lot of people who lean the GOP's way on some issues, but just can't stand the idiocy.

A vote that is lost to you and gained by the other guys hurts twice as much as a vote that is simply lost to you.

If the issue is kept alive via a debate over a constitutional amendment to prohibit gay marriage, this will further alienate republicans from the millennial generation.  This is an important issue for a voting bloc that republicans are losing.

This issue isn't going away.  In fact, I would argue that it will anger some fundies and increase the importance to the issue to them.  Candidates like Santorum will use it to appeal to the fundies.

      •  Will take a measure of good sense and small degree (0+ / 0-)

of courage to handle this.  Mitt Romney ably demonstrated what happens when you have neither one of theose items.

GOP leadership if it has any sense at all will simply refuse to take party in any action towards a Constutional amendment on this issue.

The good sense approach: "Look -- We lost in the Supreme Court. An amendment is a very difficult way to go, will take a long time, and, frankly, will never get a 2/3 supermajorit in both the House and Senate.  If that somehow managed to happen, it would then require 34 state legislatures to sign on.  Look how many states have already legalized gay marriage, and more are coming on board. 34 states is never -- never -- going to happen.

So.  We fought. We lost. We can't change it. Let's move on to important things we can do."

        Piss some people off?
        Sure.
Sometimes you just don't give a damn.
This should be one of those times for the GOP.
