    But that's probably because no one living today even knew it in the first place.

    My favorite unsung abolitionist is Lowell's own Benjamin Butler. While commanding a fort in South Carolina at the beginning of the war, he allowed escaped slaves to cross the lines and defect to the Union, instead of returning them to their owners. He declared that, since the Confederacy considers them property, he was going to declare them contraband of war. Nobody in Washington, including Lincoln, wanted to stick their necks out and get caught up in that sticky issue, so they let his decision stand. By doing so, he set off the mass defection of African Americans to Union forces.
