Indicated some confusion, but also passage. I cut them some slack because they have to go to press with whatever information there is, long before the confusion gets resolved.

Republicans said the bill passed. Democrats said time ran out. No one was sure if the new abortion restrictions had made it over the finish line.

Ultimately, the senators pulled together around 1:45 a.m. to caucus together behind closed doors. The gallery had been cleared, but the throng outside the Chamber doors chanted and yelled and sang “The Eyes of Texas are Upon You.”

After Dewhurst and the senators emerged at 2:38 a.m., the lieutenant governor said the final act — signing the bill as passed in the presence of the Senate — could not be done past the session’s deadline.

The bill was dead. And the political fallout began.

So, the results were in at 2:38 AM, less than 3 hours before the paper hit my front lawn.

“Texas is a so-called red state, but you’ve got 10 million Democrats here in Texas. And …, there are a whole lot of people here in Texas who need us, and who need us to fight for them.” President Obama
