  •  There is undoubtedly a way to accomodate (11+ / 0-)

a marriage involving more than two people. Thing is that a marriage involving only two individuals has a template that operates by default unless some other, outside agreements (that is pre-nups) are also created.

Polygamy had some plausibility when it operated on the assumption that:
    a) it involves one male and two or more females and
    b) that the rights of the females involved are inferior to those of the male and that the women become, in effect, the property of the man
    c) the male is the breadwinner and the women are all financially dependent on his efforts

That was plausible in the 19th Century. It isn't plausible today. Not only would polygamy, in order to be legal, have to provide for the possibility of multiple spouses of either sex, it would be difficult if not impossible to create legal parity amongst all partners other than by means of very complex contractual arrangements. In a simple two-partner marriage the law assumes legal equality of the spouses and a default method for dealing with inheritance rights.

As for the idiotic idea that marriage equality will somehow lead to people marrying their pets, let us not forget that a pet cannot enter a legally binding contract. Nor can a piece of furniture.

    •  Children also play into it (0+ / 0-)

Again, like with marriage, a child can legally have one or two parents (as I understand it), and the gender of the parents really doesn't matter, or at least it doesn't in states where same-sex adoption is legal.  But there is no template for a child having multiple (more than 2) legal parents, and that would be a huge mess to sort out.

The way existing laws had to be changed to make gay marriage legal.
