  •  Huh. G&Ls run about 500 to 700 bucks, i think. (2+ / 0-)

I bought mine 25 years ago, and I love it. I mean, LOVE love it. It used to irritate me when people would "commiserate" with me, because I had to buy the G&L instead of a "real" strat -- and I'd have to explain that I bought the G&L because I liked it more than a "real" strat. As the person who brought me down to the store to check it out said, "There's really only one question: Do you want a white one, or a black one?" I went with the natural blond ash.

It cost WAY more than their guitars cost now -- I think I paid about $730. Looks like the closest equivalent in their current line is the S500, which musician's friend sells for $550. What with inflation and all, my guitar was almost 3 times as expensive as an S500 today.

To put the torture behind us is, inevitably, to put it in front of us.

there are two levels of G&L  Guitars now.

The "Tribute Series" are made in China with US made pickups and hardware added here and go for between $500 and $1K.

G&L still makes their incredible handmade axes, but the prices are through the roof.

Like you I got an early model (1982 F-100 STILL my best guitar) and I paid $500 for it case included. I was buying it because I had had a lousy experience with a 1975 Strat and for me, the F100 had a completely unique voice. I have had many offers for that guitar over the years, usually AFTER someone has played it. It has gotten very beat up and is a real ugly duckling, but just play it, and you want it!

I have owned several more G&L's over the years and regret parting with ANY of them. I currently have the F-100 and a late 80's SC-3 which I got on ebay (only guitar I ever got on ebay and a bargain).

Even the Tributes are great axes, but the USA ones are out of this world.

find anything anywhere suggesting they were importing guitars, whereas their website brags about their stuff being manufactured in california.

        bummerooski.

but hey, at least the hardware is american ...

did i mention that i love my s500?
