The 1894 Sears catalog has guitars ranging in price from $4.50 to $26.00.

The Measuring Worth inflation calculator uses various inflators, so $4.50 would be about $120 based on the CPI, but $581 based on the same hours for unskilled work. The $26 guitar would run from $700 using the CPI, or $3,360 based on the wages for unskilled work. In terms of affordability, guitars are much cheaper these days, even for US made guitars. In effect, cheap Chinese guitars would have undersold Sears in the late 19th century.
