most easily by trolling Craig's List or similar want ads. Years ago I bought my first "real" guitar when I was in college; A (US-made) Gibson Les Paul Custom for $500 from another college student who gave up guitar and needed cash. This model new today would run around $2,000.

I played it for years through the legendarily affordable yet great sounding US-made Peavey Bandit amp before I upgraded to an American-made Peavey tube amp. Alas, Peavey's are almost all made overseas now.  If my old amp ever craps out I'll still buy American though, replacing it with a Carvin or a Mesa Boogie.

Not all great sounding instruments are American made.  But all American-made instruments tend to be great sounding. And as far as I'm concerned, there is no substitute for that massive heavy slab of wood called a Les Paul for those with a strong shoulder looking for a fat rich sound.

    Great diary!

Gentlemen, you can't fight in here! This is the War Room!
