    Is Thomas Mann's Death in Venice.

    My least favorite may be in the book I'm reading now.  It's a gimmick death contrived by the female protagonist, who may or may not be a serial killer and who may or may not be in love with the male protagonist.  But at the end, she really dies in his arms, a suicide by cyanide, succumbing in the catacombs beneath Paris.  Or maybe not. . .

    Yes.  It's experimental fiction.  But is it my fault I'm annoyed?
