She had a way of moving, like light on water, that turned his poor head.  He found that if he leaned his chair way back, he could catch a glimpse of her as she glided along the corridor from the lab. Her taffy-colored hair, pulled back always into a long switch, twitched between her shoulder-blades as she walked. Once he tipped the chair over completely and her footsteps paused. Reaching out his unwounded hand, he softly shut the door.

At the annual faculty dinner, he surreptiously exchanged place cards with the elderly professor of palentology who was only going to fall asleep in the salad so that he could sit by her. "I'm Franklin," he said. "I'm in herbology. And you are?"

"Marilyn. From chemistry." She smelled deliciously of sulphur, glycerin, and, faintly, tuber-rose.

"Oh? Just down the hall. Mine's the office with the poster of the Ent."

"Yes, I...that is, I've seen it." She sipped her sangria and he tried not to classify the fruit. "I'm a fan too. I wrote a paper on the composition of dragon's breath...just for fun. Would you...if I e-mail it to you, would you like to read it?"

    "Yes. Yes, please."

The professor of palentology grunted in his sleep like a diplodocus turning over in a swampy bed.  He heaved a snort from the depths of his Jurassic and said audibly, "Ask the brontosaurus to dance, Daddy."

Franklin and Marilyn looked at each other and laughed. "They're showing the extended version of The Fellowship of the Ring at the Student Center," she said. "Would you like to go with me?"
