    and saw that their colleagues could defeat almost any bill they wanted with the filibuster rule. Unable to actually change House rules to require a supermajority they still found an extralegal way to reach the same result.

    The Hastert Rule is just the House version of the filibuster, a backhanded way of making a supermajority necessary to legislate. Essentially they'll do whatever it takes - gerrymandering, voter suppression, automatic filibusters, Hastert Rule - to make sure that the minority governs this country.

      as a de-facto filibuster, but there's some logic in what you are saying.

      I agree completely that the GOP will structure their environment to rule from minority status as long as possible.  I want it to all come crashing down, and for them to go extinct as a political party. A new conservative party?  I can tolerate that.  But let the current GOP collapse.
