astronaut outside on europa observing what to me was bioluminescent = bacteria, growth, something   (lab study has shown earth lichens and cyanobacteria can survive and grow in martian environment)

so maybe a non terrestrial form of such on europa

anyway; when she turned out the light and SCREAMED ....thought aghhhhh  hopefully not some non terrestrial "monster" roaming europa

        •  They didn't do a very good job of capturing (1+ / 0-)

the astronaut mentality in those scenes.  They would breathe harder if they're terrified, but the whole time they'd be describing what's going on analytically or philosophically.  So they did a good job with the EVA scene en route, but I agree the stuff on the surface got a bit dubious.

And life close to the surface would be extremely dubious given that the biome's only energy source would be tidal friction producing seafloor vents hundreds of kilometers below the surface.  They might find organic chemicals in crustal breakthroughs, but life itself?  And we don't see complex life on Earth driven by seafloor vents - there's just not enough energy to do that, and it's also too regular to drive evolution.  There have to be challenges.

So they went the hand-wavy route to get a more exciting plot rather than really exercising their imaginations to produce exciting events out of thoroughly scientifically plausible possibilities.  Still a very science-y movie, but they chickened out on going the full Kubrick.
