She's a phony. Her concept of the pre-Civil War South comes from Gone With the Wind. Her accent is exaggerated to the point of ridiculousness. She doesn't even know how to use "y'all" in a sentence, so she throws it in every third word as a verbal tic.

Paula Deen is Southern culture as it would be presented in a Disneyland ride. She has little or no real connection to the things she promotes.

This whole thing is a foolish distraction. She spent seven years on Food Network demonstrating truly revolting recipes. I'm more upset with her over the "promoting high-fat, high sugar, low-nutrition recipes while she was treating herself for diabetes" thing than her total ignorance of any aspect of race in America. She was actively urging people to eat crap and get as sick was she was. However, at the end of the day, my response to her is the same as it has always been: Change the channel.

Is she a racist? Probably, but she hasn't shown a glimmer of understanding of what that means or how it affects other people. What she did, she did out of blind ignorance. I don't think she's a mean-spirited person (though her brother may be). I think she is pretty much unaware of what anybody but herself thinks or needs.

I won't miss her on Food Network. But then, I wouldn't have fired her for something she said in a deposition in a lawsuit that had nothing to do with her television shows.

I would have fired her for being a crap cook.

    •  Please, please, please read the claims. (0+ / 0-)

If even a tiny bit of what's claimed about her and her business practices is substantiated in court, she's one nasty piece of work.
