    memories from reading, when John Nichols, who wrote The Milagro Beanfield War, described killdeer encounters near Taos along the grounds next to the Grand Canyon in northern New Mexico. Wow, I had thought, if plover-like birds can live there, they can live pretty much anywhere.

    I have seen some killdeer in Petaluma, CA, near the end of the Petaluma River (not really a river, but an estuary of SF Bay). I don't know whether they were nesting there, but they liked to hang out there.
