I agree that there is a lot going on in there. One of my biggest frustrations, pet peeves, aggravations or whatever you want to call it, is that so many people believe that other animals are basically mindless robots operating solely on instinct and have no ability to think about anything other than eating and reproducing. I believe it's just an old idea that people have used since the beginning to justify the way we treat most of them. I don't need scientific proof to convince me that many, no, make that most, species are much more aware and much more capable of thinking and feeling than we humans give then credit for. You can't spend much time really observing nature and believe otherwise. I even include many insects in that category. Some, most, probably, will scoff at that idea, let em scoff. But they should first spend some time watching any predatory bug (or insect) through a good pair of binoculars for awhile. They might come away with a very different viewpoint. I only use predatory bugs as an example because their objectives are obvious so it's relatively easy to apply meaning to their actions. There are many other things people could observe and draw the same conclusions. Animal mothers interacting  with their young, rival males sizing each other up, etc, etc. First necessity to understanding  is an open mind though, and that may be the most difficult hurdle for many people. Just my opinion of course, no proof whatsoever, but in my heart, I know it's true.
