    The idea of it is based upon the notation of exponential increases in technology.  It then assumes that this will continue, without examination of what the underlying driving forces may be.

    The reason we can afford R&D is that we have resources at our disposal to spend on it: to feed and shelter researchers and give them materials and equipment to experiment with.  Sometimes to fail, sometimes to succeed, but always to learn.  As long as those resources available can grow exponentially, so can technological strides.

    But resources are not infinite: exponential growth in resource use cannot be maintained indefinitely.
