As I also mentioned yesterday, in some of the emails, HBGary people are talking about creating "personas", what we would call sockpuppets. This is not new. PR firms have been using fake "people" to promote products and other things for a while now, both online and even in bars and coffee houses.

But for a defense contractor with ties to the federal government, Hunton & Williams, DOD, NSA, and the CIA — whose enemies are labor unions, progressive organizations,  journalists, and progressive bloggers, a persona apparently goes far beyond creating a mere sockpuppet.

According to an embedded MS Word document found in one of the HBGary emails, it involves creating an army of sockpuppets, with sophisticated "persona management" software that allows a small team of only a few people to appear to be many, while keeping the personas from accidentally cross-contaminating each other. Then, to top it off, the team can actually automate some functions so one persona can appear to be an entire Brooks Brothers riot online.

    •  The HBGary/Anonymous blow up, I believe, is (5+ / 0-)

a key point in this debate and it's been totally ignored.

I have a theory that Snowden is Anonymous and that situation was a trigger for action.

Just a guess, really, but the timeframe isn't too bad, and most serious tech people were kind of freaked out by that situation.

Stuxnet type rootkits are every bit the danger, probably more so, that the wholesale collection of internet data.

The other thing that is seriously scary about this is the predictive modeling and psych profiling that could be done with this kind of wholesale data collection.

      Thanks for the link, ll.

      •  Interesting idea vis a vis the wikileaks (5+ / 0-)

connection.  The problem with this kind of conjecture however, is that it can be fed into the dialogue by just the sockpuppets we were discussing. So you have to ask, who would benefit from launching a meme that Snowden was a wikileaks guy?  I think the security state would love that rumor to get traction.  Any accurate reading of a discussion of the security state such as this one,  needs to be thinking on at least a couple of levels.  For all you guys know, I'm working for the NSA and have some agenda that publishing this blog accomplishes.  I will often visit the page of any diarist who takes strong positions against a particular argument, and then you at least have a chance of knowing who you're talking to, but on the internet, you never really do.  That said, I don't work for the NSA, or any other intelligence group, or the government, or a corporation.  Really.  ;)

of Snowden, but that's manufactured propaganda, IMO.

Not that it isn't effective, mind you...

The comment I was responding to was about the HBGary deal, and it got a lot of play with some of us here, but many did not pick up on it at all.

They are the ones surprised by Snowden's revelations and are attacking Snowden, BTW.

I believe if you were interested or followed that story, you have a much different opinion on Snowden than people who were ignorant or appalled by it.

          Peace~

COINTELPRO 2.0 . . . things can go downhill pretty fast from here, given the tech that now exists.

I turned off my TV when it went digital. Given that it's dependent upon an IP address, it's no longer broadcast, IMO.

That means that information on my set could be different from your set.

It would really not be that hard to push buttons on people when you know their psych profile and their media consumption.

          •  Ads are targeted now. Doing the same with content? (1+ / 0-)

            No problem.

Same deal as those experiments at Amazon etc., where they show people different prices for the same item and treat them differently, based on their browsing and buying history and predicted profitability to the company over time.

            •  I don't mind the ads so much on a pull technology (0+ / 0-)

like the internet, but targeted content on on media that is pushed out is just rife for abuse.

Didn't hear about the Amazon experiments... nice.

yes, it was an article on HBGary.

Gitmo is a Concentration Camp. Not a Detention Center. Torture happens at Concentration Camps. Torture happens at Gitmo. How much further will US values fall? Where is YOUR outrage at what the United States does in OUR names?
