  •  Right. Wing. Militia. Movement. (0+ / 0-)

If you don't know what they are, it would behoove you to learn. No, their numbers are probably not 500,000 -- they're probably about 1/10 that amount. But:

    A) I was speaking hypothetically, and

    B) it's not that far a stretch to imagine them growing by a factor of 10 without being a broadly popular movement. I'm not saying it's going to happen, or likely to happen. I'm saying it might, conceivably, happen.

I really don't know if you're simply rationalizing, or truly unaware of who these people are and what they stand for; but if you're not a troll, you do not want to make common cause with them.

Let us all have the strength to see the humanity in our enemies, and the courage to let them see the humanity in ourselves.

    •  You talk on and on, but talk aound what (0+ / 0-)

this post is about.  You want the government to be able to come into a state uninvited to quash right wing rebellions I guess.  I'm more concerned with preserving civil liberties so we don't need a rebellion, regardless which political camp it originates in.

      •  The U.S. Constitution gives the Federal government (0+ / 0-)

the power "To provide for calling forth the Militia to execute the Laws of the Union, suppress Insurrections and repel Invasions".

In your view, does the very existence of this power suppress civil liberties?

If your answer is "no", then please describe under what circumstances you believe the Federal government would appropriately exercise that power. I'd also like to understand how you would re-word the documents that we're talking about so that they describe those circumstances and no other.

If your answer is "yes", then at least I understand where you're coming from, even if I disagree.

        •  Would a peaceful nationwide OWS strike qualify for (0+ / 0-)

          the definition of "insurrections"?

          •  No. (0+ / 0-)

Because it's peaceful, and the government has no legitimate reason to respond to a peaceful demonstration with military force.

            •  One of the points of this diary is to (0+ / 0-)

point out that with the revelations of Snowden about the scale of and possible/probable misuse of intelligence from domestic spying, there is a strong possibility that there now exists or will exist a cabal of people and interests functioning within the legal framework of government that could operate extra legally vis a vis my mention of J. Edgar Hoover's abuses in the diary.  When you have the dirt on everyone holding public office, from SCOTUS to POTUS to the Legislature the definition of "law" becomes quite flexible.    Now you don't think that possible, and you're entitled to your opinion.  Again, we will have to agree to disagree.  I envy your faith in human nature.
