Because of the Vietnam war draft the voting age was lowered nationally, and the drinking age generally state by state, with variations.  The result was that most young people didn't bother to vote.  They did drink, however, and drive.  The automobile death rate skyrocketed for that age range.  The age was returned to 21 to protect the young people from themselves, as well as protecting the rest of us.  Of course they still drink, and still drink and drive, but it seems to help prevent some of them from killing themselves and others.

I agree that it should all be consistent.  Let's see how many people will sign up for the military if the age is 21 instead of 18.  And voting?  They still don't vote much.  So it's probably a wash either way.

much tighter enforcement and increase in penalties for drunk driving did not make the difference.  When I was growing up in the 70's if you where white and middle class and the cops caught you drunk they would follow you home instead of bust you.  It was common for people to drink and drive.  When that age limit was raised we also passed tougher and started enforcing drunk driving laws.

I think there should be no age limit but the BAC limit should be 0.00%.  Why.  I've seen people who could drain a 12 pack and drive fine and others that turn into classics drunks after 1/2 a beer, natural variation, driving skill, toleration levels, etc.

A 0.00% makes it easy for everyone to know when they have reached their limit and that driving is now illegal for them.  It would also help push us out of our individual cars that will kill the planet otherwise.
