  •  IANAL, but I think this was an easy case since (0+ / 0-)

the harm and blatant inequity caused by DOMA was so very evident, and the underlying love story and disability of Windor's spouse gave it a human dimension many legal cases lack.    Plus she makes for a very sympathetic plaintiff.    I was surprised that Windsor had to shop around for a lawyer at all - maybe they were concerned that she wouldn't survive to the conclusion of the legal process.

Given that SCOTUS had never before had the opportunity to rule on DOMA at all, and every court which had ruled on the merits had found it unconstitutional, I think the outcome was clear.
