    Perhaps they are just heaping up all the data in the hopes of finding patterns that will tell them about something....if not terrorism, then fluctuations in stock prices, currency valuations, market trends, even fads in music and fashions.... After all, you can't find out what it might tell you if you don't try.

    There seems to be an underlying assumption that if you knew everything, you could predict the future. I don't think it would work, but they seem determined to have a go at it. And besides, someone is getting very well paid for all that hardware and software -- corporate welfare.
