    things you have stored in the cloud. But you have NO WAY of knowing that you actually succeeded in doing so. Odds are very much against you in that equation because of that pesky thing known as backup, which, incidentally, is usually outside the reach of your valiant Shift-Delete key combo.

      But I think the person's point was that the only way to guarantee that something you need is not deleted is to have your own copy. That a cloud service only logically deletes something or has a backup of the deleted item is no guarantee that it will never actually be deleted and would not be something I would rely on if I were the NSA.
