    It pains me to read about classroom experiences such as the one you described. What a cruel teacher.

    I was particularly hit by the part of people who really, really want to say they are "part" Indian, but that is as far as it goes. Have encountered that in my own family, and I definitely encountered a lot of people in Oklahoma who talked about being "part Indian," but always stressed their whiteness. It's like their statement is a microcosm of history, with the whiteness defeating the Indian every time in their own bodies.
