    and there was a LOT of conflict around Inara's profession, and it was not accepted everywhere.  Besides, I think Whedon was going for more of a concubine role, which has some widespread historical roots, rather than as a 'high paid escort' type of situation.  Concubines were, at least during early antiquity, semi-autonomous, and when they rejected a lover, they were auctioned off quickly enough, mostly at their own insistence.
