  •  Holland Cooke knows what he's talking about (5+ / 0-)

Ask him about progressive talk. What does he think of its prospects?

In my market (Boston), listeners appear to be abandoning political talk for sports talk. That's bad news for Rush Limbaugh, but it's not necessarily good news for progressives.

    •  Talk has never been a factor for progressives (4+ / 0-)

National talking heads have never been very important to progressive politics or progressive ideas. Progressives have learned out of necessity to go through other channels, most importantly the web.

Radio matters to progressives only on select markets with a strong local personalty well tuned to the local market on a local station (and there aren't many of them left anyway).

So, if syndicated talk radio dies, close to no one on the progressive side will notice (or care that much).

I deal in facts. My friends are few but fast.

    •  do you have a liberal talk station in boston? (0+ / 0-)

i think comparing RW and LW radio listenership can only be done well if there is fair competition.

those who have used RW radio very successfully as a propaganda tool the last 25 years would rather their listeners choose between RW and sports- they don't want the massive audience of casual listeners who tune into RW because there's no other choice or it's loud or they use that station for traffic and weather etc., to have a liberal or truthful alternative.

i think the results would be very surprising if casual listeners had an easy free choice, and if it was nationwide the political landscape would take a dramatic turn left.

This is a list of 76 universities for Rush Limbaugh that endorse global warming denial, racism, sexism, and GOP lies by broadcasting sports on over 170 Limbaugh radio stations.
