  •  Maryland voting (14+ / 0-)

Major expansion of voting rights went into effect today as a result of HB224 that was signed in May. Early voting is expanded from 6 days to 8 days. Voter registration can now be done online. Absentee ballots may be requested online. Absentee ballots may be marked online, and then printed for mailing to the Board of Election. There will now to same day registration during early voting. The number of early voting centers has been increased and counties now have the authority to open 1 more than is required by law. The state Board of Elections is also required to conduct a study of voter wait times in the 2010 and 2012 elections to determine why there have been delays in voting and requires them to make recommendations by December 31, 2013 for ways to ensure wait times are no more than 30 minutes. It also directs the Board of Elections to being looking into the possibility of online voting and report on its findings.
