    Mandela remained a hero of the people.  As a pacifist, I was disappointed in the days when he rejected nonviolence to lead the military arm of the ANC. But Mandela's conduct at his trial and in prison and his post-prison presidency and life were amazing examples of forgiveness and healing.

    And he continued to champion the poor. Then the LGBT community and to work to combat AIDS. And climate change. And he worked for peace and against the "global war on terror."

    He never stopped.  What a true hero.  He EARNED his Nobel Peace Prize and all the other honors that came his way.

    He will be missed.
