run away from the Tea Party crazies, but leave the GOP brand with those crazies.  Then I'd hope Republicans would go the way of the Whigs, and their hateful, xenophobic, homophobic, sex-phobic ideas would go down with the GOP ship and be discredited for ever.

The "moderate" former Republicans might ally with the Democrats for a while, in some sort of coalition, but I imagine that wouldn't last.  A single party would likely split into two or more parties before very long, presumably at least one progressive and one conservative.

We're all pretty strange one way or another; some of us just hide it better. "Normal" is a dryer setting.

I don't think I will ever be able to reconcile myself to the Republican Party - when I honestly cannot find a single issue on which we can agree. "Moderate" conservatives means hard right conservatives in the rest of the world. I can deal with them, but not as Republicans. The Republican Party itself? May it disappear or become a tiny minority, like Le Pen in France, or whatever Brownshirt nationalist party still polls 5% in the UK.
