    Fast-food places have policies in place prohibiting their employees from accepting tips. On rare, rare occasions, franchises will set tip jars on the front counter (I've seen it here in MI) but generally, the restaurant just pockets those instead of the employees.

    If these stores were audited by corporate, they would likely find them in violation of their franchise agreement. What penalties exist as a result of that, I don't know, but I do know that McDonalds as an example explicitly forbids tips and employees who accept them usually lose their jobs very quickly.
