    In the Atlanta metro area, compare Dekalb County data, where there is a strong PD office with many attorneys, with those of Cobb or Gwinnett, where most cases are farmed out to private attorneys. On a cost per case basis, Dekalb is much more efficient than the other Atlanta metro counties. And they win!

    Public Defenders are part of the justice system that includes the courts, the prosecutors, and the police. If you starve any one of these, the whole system slowly grinds to a halt. If you run the numbers for most municipalities, you'd find that increasing funding for indigent defense actually results in overall savings to the system. But nobody wants to think that way.

    A happy benefit to properly funding indigent defense efforts is that delays in justice are decreased. And at the end the day, justice is the goal, isn't it?
