    How about "underpaid and overworked." I know people who did better with a PD than people who shellled out big $$$ to a private attorney who didn't give a damn about the case.
    Here is the rule for hiring an attorney - an attorney who takes and interest in your case and pursues it aggressively is better than some big name lawyer, who may be handling 6 figure cases and your measly $10 or $20 grand does not capture his attention. You need passion, not technical skill. I saw a show about 30 years ago on "Heraldo" where he had the "winningest" lawyers in America - Howard Kunstler, Gerry Spence, and a few others who I can't remember, and that was there advice. It is totally true and has been borne out time and time in cases I have been involved in. You want someone ready to go toe-to-toe with the asshole PA who is trying to get you to plea to a felony 5 rather than face trial on a felony 3.
