  •  Dave Chappelle, but also a warning. (11+ / 0-)

I'm plenty white and I put my hands on the wheel where the cops can see them: after a state cop was shot in a traffic stop by a man coming out of the trunk of a sedan, I realized that they have every right to consider every stop an opportunity for danger.

    •  Car accidents are the biggest danger to police (6+ / 0-)

officer, by far. Getting shot by someone they are pulling over is incredibly rare, even in areas with a lot of violence. That sort of over-reaction is a huge part of the problem. Coupled with the fact that people are far, far more likely to see something a black man is holding as a gun makes for a situation where black men bear the brunt of the impact of the false impression of danger.

The media is one of the obvious culprits in spreading the violent black man with a gun meme. Of course, it's also a vicious circle with them and the police because the police will shoot a black man who they believe to have a gun and then he suddenly becomes "A black man with a gun" until weeks later when the police admit he didn't have a gun and the media, of course, doesn't report that salient fact.

But your story just serves to reinforce the false narrative of how dangerous being a cop really is, and more importantly where that danger comes from.

If debt were a moral issue then, lacking morals, corporations could never be in debt.

      •  That sort of over-reaction, alas... (0+ / 0-)

        ...is part of being human.

It's the reason why we spend tens of billions on preventing terrorist attacks, when we could spend tens of millions on preventing auto accidents and save more lives. Literally more lives, in absolute terms, not per dollar or anything.

There have been several years in the United States where you were less likely to be killed by foreign terrorists than you were to be killed by being crushed under a vending machine.
