  •  I used to go to the Boston celebration. (10+ / 0-)

We never bothered to stake a spot in front of the Hatch Shell, you'd have to show up before dawn. We just sat by the river where we could hear the Pops, see the fireworks and the reflection. It was amazing.

When we were living in Toyko, we were back in Boston for the Fourth and stayed in the Sheraton in Newton (the hotel that was over the Pike) and our room had a clear view of the fireworks. We turned on the TV to hear the Pops -- and the fireworks were a bit delayed, but it was still very cool. It was Kgirl's first fireworks show. She had just turned one -- and she was totally unimpressed. She just wanted to go back to sleep.

First the thing is impossible, then improbable, then unsatisfactorily achieved, then quietly improved, until one day it is actual and uncontroversial. ... It starts off impossible and it ends up done. - Adam Gopnik
