church, you cannot be a good christian (So say catholics, mormons, and many other sects - and let's not get started about temples, both jewish or muslim), then I suspect that the two are irretrievably tied together.

What we call god is merely a living creature with superior technology & understanding. If their fragile egos demand prayer, they lose that superiority.

Fear is a powerful motivator.  Even now, so many decades later, I recall how the penguins tried hard to use it on me. Steel ruler and all.

Ignorance is every religion's friend. Some religions excel at keeping their sheeple at bay, especially by insisting on ignorance, and spicing it up with fear. If an individual becomes too smart and too self-confident to be victimized by his/her church, I suggest that it is far more likely that that individual will become an agnostic or atheist.

But the psychological need for God may be there in a brilliant person, regardless of whether he can figure it out logically.  So the idea of God can be accepted by these folks without even conforming to what the Bible says.

Maybe that's closer to a Deistic outlook, but I can imagine Christians taking the God of Deism and still refitting God as Jesus and still calling themselves Christians.  And who can tell them they're not?
