  •  A more than minor reservation. (19+ / 0-)

I understand your anger, and agree that this country has been ill-served by its cabal of old, rich, white men.  I just find your rhetoric divisive. Just as "men' is not a catch-all, nor is "women". Women have had the vote for many years, and outnumbered men for, I think, all that time, and yet many of them vote against their own interests. There are, after all, quite a few Republican women.

So, if you truly want a meaningful change, you are going to need a bunch of men to work with you, because there sure are sure as shooting a bunch of women who will work against you.

    •  One of the many reasons I come to this site (33+ / 0-)

is to enjoy all the support from men who believe women are equal.

Don't get much of that in real life.

But we sure do need more women in government.

I do not want a turnabout and have just women in power, I want fairness.

      •  Absolutely. (23+ / 0-)

And I say this as an old, white male. There need to be many more women in higher office, and a boatload more intelligent, aware men. (replacing the boatload of dung beetles who shall remain nameless. And Republican.)

...pulled off by the authoritarian right and the one percent that rules us is that merely being an "old white man" or merely a white man, or a white male straight christian, what have you is enough to qualify one for power. It isn't, and it never has been. Wealth and power have always been the province of a very select few and most do not qualify. The one percent might be (mostly) all old white males, but all old white males are not members of the one percent, not by a bloody long shot. All A's are B, but that doesn't mean all B's are A.

The myth is useful though because it keeps the supposedly privileged class thinking they can join the upper crust one day (they can't) and supporting their interests, and it keeps minorities focused on a broad swath of the population as their oppressors when really only a select few have the power and means to oppress anybody. As long as they can keep the 99% fighting amongst ourselves, they win. They will use any and all issues they can, race, religion, sex, you name it to keep the working class divided against itself.

All issues are human issues. All rights are human rights. We haven't won until justice and fairness are the law of the land for everyone.

      •  I could support fairness... If we could get it. (5+ / 0-)

That is all any of us have ever asked for....but we never have gotten it.

    •  Obviously, there are very liberal, (6+ / 0-)

progressive men. And there are women, as you point out, willing to vote against their own interests.

But statistically women are much more apt to vote liberally than me.

    •  Ya know...at this point... I really don't care (5+ / 0-)

if what I have written is divisive or not...

Men have been in power for thousands of years... thousands of years of war, and pain, and suffering. Men have churned out paternalist laws and policies that has cause so much suffering. Men in general have treated women and minorities like so much shit on their shoes.

Women have yet to start many, if any, wars....but we have born the brunt of the brutality of war...from being caught in the cross fire and/or watching our children killed, to being raped by the invaders...

Women didn't start the Inquisition, yet we were the biggest target...

Yes, there are some women who can't or won't think for themselves and thus are members of the Teapublican party and who vote against their own best interests. ...but I think you will find that those are, like their old white men counterparts to be a dying breed.

Keep it up. A problem is best solved after hearing opinions and beliefs from everyone effected.

      •  The one percent have been in power (0+ / 0-)

not men in general, or white men in general, or straight white christian men in general. Keeping us divided and fighting amongst ourselves is how they keep their power.

I haven't oppressed you, or gays, or racial minorities. I don't have the power to oppress anyone. I'm not in charge here. And I never will be. I'm a peon in this fucked up system just like you are.

We'll only accomplish fairness and justice for all when we unite as one and go after the tiny group of elite that are screwing us all.

        •  Ummmmm beg pardon? (0+ / 0-)

Men run this world... so who's fault is it that the world is in such a mess?

It is men who are deciding what women can and cannot do with our own bodies... or who we can or cannot marry...

It is men who will not pay women what we are worth, the same as any man.

It is men who want to redefine rape as  "free speech" or say that rape is inevitable and we should just "relax and enjoy it."

It would appear that men would like to put women back in the kitchen barefoot and pregnant

Of course I would like to see unity...That's something women and minorities have been trying to get for thousands of years. To be recognized as equals...

          We cannot even get that.

In the past I have tried to encourage unity and to get people to look at all of the discrimination as a single Human Rights issue. I got little to no response here and else where. And the comments that were made were again, pushing their own agenda rather than LISTENING.

I guess I am just tired of beating my head against a brick wall...

          Einstein once said;

"The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again expecting the different results."
IMO, it is long past time to try something new...for the betterment of Humankind...  Could we women do any worse of a job?

          •  I wouldn't at all mind a matriarcy (0+ / 0-)

But that's a fantasyland and we both know it.

Look at everything you listed. Are "men" in charge of all those things, or are a small group of elite powermongers?

I am against each and every one of the injustices you list. And I have no hand in supporting, much less causing, any of them. You're pointing your cannons in the wrong direction.

I didn't ask to be born this gender, and nobody asked me my opinion on the issue. I just got stuck with this body whether I like it or not. And it doesn't earn me membership in an evil secret society conspiring to oppress you. I'm poor and powerless, I couldn't oppress anyone if I tried. And if I knocked on the door of the elite fringe that do hold the power and do oppress everyone that isn't them, I'd get arrested for being inside the gate.

Honestly, I thought we as progressives were against hating people for things they were born and thus are beyond their control?

Of the 100 richest people in the world I count only 9 women...   That is not even 10% of the 1%.

          •  Logical fallacy (0+ / 0-)

All A may be B, but that doesn't mean that all B are also A.

Men are somewhere around 50% of the population. The 1% is, well, 1%. Let's for the sake of argument say they're all male, and round for a 50/50 gender distribution to keep the math simple.

Thus, 50% of the population is female and not in the elite, 49% are male and not in the elite, and 1% are male and in the elite.

That means that 98% of the male population is not in the elite, not in power and thus not the problem.

As I said, we need to focus on the small group of power elite that are screwing us all, because you're not getting any blood out of the turnips that are the rest of us.

to herself. We have plenty of Phyllis Schlafley types mixed in that we need to keep as far away from any power as possible, too.

I'm with howabout, I want smart and capable and fair in positions of power, I don't care as much which plumbing is in place or the ratio between them. We need to be able to work together.
