  •  Clean gas, clean coal, clean oil sands... (0+ / 0-)

The Canadian government and the oil industry run ads touting how the latest extraction processes for the tar / oil sands leave the surface undisturbed, or easily restored to its original state. Of course, they don't mention that when you inject hot water or steam to essentially melt or dissolve the goop out of the sandy matrix, contaminated water will spread from the extraction area outward... Presumably, the contaminants may work their way into the water table and thence to surface water. The geological / seismic stability of areas from which the tarry glue has been extracted is another question...

The premise seems to be "out of sight, out of mind" -- if you can't see the damage, there isn't any. (This philosophy also underlay the government reluctance to allow any press coverage when the bodies of soldiers killed in Afghanistan arrived, and the efforts to keep any protesters well away from G8 / G20 participants in Toronto a few years ago.)
