    if you marry the person you're dp'd to, however.

    under California law a domestic partnership is exactly the same as marriage.

    I wonder if the legislature will just change all dps over to marriages ... that's what's happened in other states (like Vermont). On the other hand, domestic partnerships are also contracted by elderly couples who do NOT want to be seen as married under federal law.
