    even good catholic universities.

For all the RCC's faults, they have always valued scholarship.

I don't know if the Catholic schools are begging voucher money, or even if all the christian schools are as bad as the ones I hear about. Haven't researched it. I do know that the voucher drive is really ripe for corruption, and bad for public education. oh, and I don't trust fundies much.

Christian denominations such as the Lutherans and also the Episcopal Church--which has traditionally been associated with ivy league prep.

I resent that. I demand snark, and overly so -- Markos Moulitsas.

      •  Southern "Christian Academies" have "a history" (6+ / 0-)

Many started as a direct reaction to Brown v Board. They bore little resemblance to the Catholic and "mainline" Protestant schools which already existed: they were intended to subvert public school integration.

My hometown was 26% African American: our school district was 42% African American by the mid-70s. When "all deliberate speed" finally arrived to my school district in the early 70s, there was a local explosion of these schools. A handful actually became legit institutions only because "the right parents" had control of the establishment process.
