    there was no political way that Great Britain could have recognized the Confederacy. Clandestinely supplying them with arms and buying goods from them was one thing, but outright diplomatic recognition was impossible. And, actual military intervention by the UK was just a Confederate fantasy.

    France might have been a bit more sympathetic to the Confederacy, but they'd recently been run out of Mexico (
    so probably didn't have much stomach for further foreign adventurism.
