  •  Major difference - against Japan and Germany, we (0+ / 0-)

were fighting foreign countries and foreign cultures.  With the Confederate States of America, these were fellow Americans who spoke the same language, had fought major wars on the side of the North in gaining and keeping Independence from Britain and who shared many other similarities.  Families were torn apart by the Civil War as some members fought on the two sides.  That rarely happened with the Axis powers in World War II.

The fact that there are major forces still at work popularizing and grandstanding to promote the positions of the Confederacy is deplorable, but they're still states of the United States and while there are some who agitate for secession again, that's not even close to happening.

I don't think punishing the South would have been in America's best interests, even with the history of the KKK, Jim Crow laws and the rest since the Civil War.  I think it would have been too divisive and the states would be even more separate than they are today.
