Both to your comment and the comment above yours'. According to that line of reasoning only white people can be racist and nobody else can be - even when they make obviously racist statements like the one at the top of this thread. I call bullshit.

    •  Racism depends on power. (14+ / 0-)

Bigotry does not.  Anyone can be bigoted, racially or otherwise.  To be racist, you have to belong to the racial group that is (and has been) in power in a nation/region.  So, yeah, speaking technically, in the United States, only white people can be racist while we still maintain the power and the supporting infrastructure.

If you want a 'post-racial' society, you need a society in which median wealth is independent of race, where ability to be elected to public office is independent of race, where educational levels are independent of race, where police harassment and incarceration are independent of race.  Not one in which the median wealth of blacks is 1/20th of whites, where only 7 blacks have ever served in the Senate, where 'stop and frisk' stops each black person in a city more than once a year on average, where driving while black or walking while black can be a death sentence, where minority heavy schools are funded and staffed well enough that scores don't have a racial bias, where 1 in 6 black men don't wind up in jail while only 1 in 100 white men do.

A black president is a nice milestone, but it's really not much different than rich black entertainers - a statistical outlier.  We've got a hell of a long way to go to end the incredible racial divide in this country, and we just took several majors steps backward in doing so, thanks to the Roberts Court's hatred for equal voting rights and programs set up to address the racial divide.

Yep. Don't like reality? Label it bullshit.

I call the fact that there's something we can label "driving while black" bullshit. I call the disparities in incarceration rates bullshit. I call the fact that traffic stops for white people involve a police officer standing outsider their car saying "do you know how fast you were going?', while traffic stops for black people involve them standing on the side of the highway while the police search their car (even if the cops are black) bullshit.

You call the idea that racism is rooted in privilege bullshit.

      •  Interesting. I agree with you that those things (1+ / 0-)

are bullshit. Hey, look at me, I can walk and chew gum at the same time!

Now maybe you can defend what you call "reality" and I call the racially prejudice view that ALL white people think and feel the same way.

And if you really do think that it IS reality, then I would imagine you never hang out with or associate with any white people since 100% of white people feel superior to other races and are therefore bad people.

        •  Touch a nerve? (3+ / 0-)

Walking and chewing gum? Don't you mean walking and editing? Check your comment, what you actually said was

According to that line of reasoning only white people can be racist and nobody else can be
which is rather different from your re-imagined version
I call the racially prejudice view that ALL white people think and feel the same way
Racism (as opposed to prejudice) is embedded in a power differential. And as I said elsewhere, that power differential is pervasive. So whether you want to say "only white people can be racist" or "white racism is qualitatively different", it boils down to the same thing. And I'm speaking from experience. I grew up in a society where white people account for about 1% of the population, maybe a couple more if you count the 'near whites'. A society where the government has been run by non-white people since the 1950s. And where a white boy could tell a group of black boys in school "if my ancestors hadn't brought yours from Africa, you'd still be living in trees" - and they'd have no effective retort. You may imagine that all racial prejudice is equal.

But obviously this all touched a nerve, since you went from that to the utterly bizarre

And if you really do think that it IS reality, then I would imagine you never hang out with or associate with any white people since 100% of white people feel superior to other races and are therefore bad people.
Obviously, I've said nothing of the sort. And being 'near white', with a white parent, a white spouse, and an overwhelmingly white peer group, your attempt at an insult is laughable. But it says a lot about you.

Are you one of those people who believe that Trayvon's "cracker" comment makes his racism indistinguishable from Zimmerman's? Or do you actually agree with me, but you're so wedded to your own white privilege that my mere assertion prompts you to last out at me, to cast aspersions on my friendships and my marriage. Grow up, get over yourself.
