    Audio has been posted purporting to be of the conversation between a pilot aboard Morales's flight and the control room at Vienna airport.[...]

    Part of the conversation goes:

    “Do you need any assistance?”

    “Not at this moment. We need to land because we cannot get a correct indication of the fuel indication … we need to land.”

    This problem might indicate why the Bolivian foreign minister, David Choquehuanca, accused France and Portugal of putting the president's life at risk by cancelling authorisation for the plane.

    Also from a security perspective, if a head of state has to veer from a route approved by their security detail, it could potentially put them at risk.

      That is another 2205 miles , they had the fuel to reach the Canary Islands ? The whole thing about them not knowing how much fuel they had is interesting . It could be that their fuel gauges were not functioning , if that is the case they needed to land asap . I just read a report about an aircraft crashing for the lack of working fuel gauges .

      They didn't "veer" . If you look at the route they took .
      2nd , any pilot knows that any flight needs to be flexible .
      Many people have crashed and died because they didn't "veer".

        Spain was among the countries that denied Morales' plane permission to refuel.  The Canary Islands are Spanish. So he needed to come down somewhere, and would have needed a refueling site in Europe even if the plane weren't experiencing difficulties with its instrumentation.

        It was a dumbfuck power play of old-fashioned Yanque Imperialismo, forced upon European allies to show Morales who was boss.

          Get out a map , draw a 2000 mile circle out around their position when they turned around , tell me that only Europe is in that circle .

            like a dog to its favorite bone.

            If you search the regular media, you will find consistent reports that the Bolivian president's flight plan, as of Tuesday AM, was: Moscow to Lisbon (refuel), Lisbon to Guyana (refuel), Guyana to Bolivia.

            Nice, reasonable, relatively safe short hops.

            The flight plan had to be junked when the plane was over western Austria, due to, let's just say, lack of international cooperation.

            The plane then reversed course, landing in Vienna, Austria, with a claim of a faulty fuel gauge (possibly true, not otherwise verified).

            The plane, and its occupants, stayed in Vienna overnight while discussions went on (and on, and on) as to how to proceed from where they now were.

            Permission to land and refuel at Lisbon was still denied, for "technical reasons" (whatever that may mean).

            Permission was eventually granted to stop and refuel at Las Palmas, in the Canary Islands. This was a reasonable distance from Vienna, although it meant crossing over 1000 miles of open water - so this became part of the new, revised Wednesday flight plan.

            Las Palmas was NEVER on the original Tuesday flight plan. Nor should it have been. The original itinerary, as described, was about as risk-averse as possible considering that there was still an ocean to cross.

            I apologize for having been increasingly rude earlier, but you kept yammering on and on and on about "Las Palmas, Las Palmas, Las Palmas" as though that WAS the original flight plan.

            It. was. NOT.

            And the most likely place for you to have gotten THAT silly idea was the error-filled and confusingly, sloppily, shoddily written AtlanticWire article.

            EVERY other news source clearly and explicitly stated a planned itinerary of Moscow-Lisbon-Guyana-Bolivia.

            ONLY the AtlanticWire made such a hash of it as to confuse people who did not read the article with full attention AND cross-check with other, including some of the cited, sources.
