  •  In the words of my (6+ / 0-)

    (very self-centered) late grandmother:

If only my father had not given away so much of his labor and crops, we could have had something. But year after year, he gave away baskets of crops and spent his weekends fixing people's houses for free. That's why he never had anything to show for his life.
My mother lived with that lament all of her youth and I heard it many, many times growing up.  Matter of fact, my grandmother was telling that tale at her father's funeral - which was filled with many folks from the families he helped along the way.

He was a master cabinetmaker, BTW - I still have many of his pieces, including a more primitive wardrobe he made as a teenager pre-1900.

    The truth always matters.

She had a misplaced belief that everything he did for others took something away from her. She did not learn from his example, and whether or not that was a personality trait or due to something she experienced as a hardship is something that is difficult to know.

I'm sure you treasure those pieces! He put love into them, which is what your grandmother never understood.

To see a world in a grain of sand, And a heaven in a wild flower, Hold infinity in the palm of your hand, And eternity in an hour. - William Blake
