  •  I think the diary is excellent (3+ / 0-)

in pointing out just how far we haven't come and how much we have just lost ground as a nation on civil rights.

But to say one gain being celebrated was to minimize the damage of a very large loss, I think pits people against each other when it doesn't have to be that way.

And people will have their own, number one wish, and it won't always be the same for everyone.  Humans are after all rather insular in their thinking by nature, we form social groups, but we are hardly organized on a hive basis.

I cannot fathom that Rachel Maddow (and I presume that is the  Rachel you were addressing) is not 'with' persons of color when it comes to voting rights.  If she doesn't have the bona fides to be a progressive in favor of rights for all,  there can't be many anywhere who are white or gay who can't be set up to be the enemy.

      Dearest jfromga ...

I never said that it is not okay to celebrate...

Indeed Rachel as we celebrate the rights awarded to the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender let us also ask ourselves what is the State of the Union? What if Barack Obama were born today?  Eighteen years from now will a young Barack have the opportunity to attend a college, and were he to run for President, would he himself be allowed to vote? What bell will toll in the next score, and will it toll for thee?
As I hope you see, I am saying it is vital that we think of our history and the huge loss the Affirmative Action and Voting Rights decision represent.

May life bring you peace, prosperity and pleasant dreams being the best and your reality...Betsy
