marriage fraud in order to obtain immigration status.

    No sir eee.

"marriage fraud"? No state marriage license? No 'authorized' offiator of the ceremony? I'm not seeing how anybody's marriage - apart from same sex couples in states/nations that do not issue marriage licenses to same sex couples - can be deemed by anyone in or out of government to be "fraudulent" because they don't like the rights, privileges, or even the hardships that come with marriage for the individuals who undertake the marriage.

Do you suspect the individuals don't love each other? How does that invalidate a marriage? Suspect they only did it for residency rights? How does that invalidate a marriage? Suspect they met on an internet message board or through an internet dating service? How does that invalidate a marriage? Suspect they got hooked up through personal ads in the classifieds? Etc., etc., etc.

You get the piece of paper - which requires nothing more than stated intent to marry, some valid identification, any requisite clean bills of venerial health and the fee - you get a JP or preacher or 'other' official to sign it, you send it in and it goes into the record file. The marriage is and remains valid until or unless the parties jump all the legal hoops to get divorced. Your opinion of the propriety of the match counts for exactly zip.

on being legally married, you better believe it makes a difference whether the marriage is a sham or not.

No, this doesn't invalidate the marriage, but it does invalidate the basis for your immigration status. And if you lie as part of your immigration application, that's a crime in and of itself.

      •  When you are dealing with immigration, it's not... (0+ / 0-) simple as you might imagine.

        •  You're probably right. (0+ / 0-)

Now that mixed race couples and gays can marry and have their rights honored by teh gub'mint, the last frontier of pointless discrimination against other people's mate choices is all about mixed birthplaces. Honestly, I'd hoped this stupid old world would look a little bit better by the time I got old enough to retire.
