    the US federal army noticing massive civil uprising in the south, and therefore in order to maintain peace and prevent civil war, the federal army overthrows Lincoln, begins plans for new elections, and installs Chief Justice Taney as interim president?

    (Not that I think Lincoln's election and the road to US Civil War serves all that well as an analogy to the current situation in Egypt.)

      violate the rule of law.

      The state governors did.

      That's the key difference here, I would argue.
