Corey Robin wrote an excellent book on conservatism back in 2011 called The Reactionary Mind.  His thesis is that “Conservatism is the theoretical voice of this animus against the agency of the subordinate classes.”  So there is a reaction against the gains feminists made during the 1960s and 1970s which is combined with the "New South's" economic policy of poaching Northern industries with lax environmental  policies and a cheaper more compliant labor force which has been their economic strategy since the end of the Civil War.
